The National Museum of African Art is an
African art museum situated in Washington, D.C., United States. The museum is
one of nineteen under the side of the Smithsonian Institution. It was started
in 1964 and it was actually situated at the Frederick Douglass House in the
Capitol Hill neighborhood of Washington, D.C.
In 1979 the museum was moved over to the
Smithsonian and shifted to the National Mall. It opened up in its current
location, as one of two institutions, designed generally underground, in the quadrangle
complex regarding the Smithsonian Institution Building in 1987.
Arriving and Parking at National Museum of
African Art
Vehicles displaying the international
symbol of accessibility may park in the designated parking spaces on Jefferson
Drive. Metered parking is also available on Independence Avenue.
The main entrance to the museum, located on
Independence Avenue near the gate to the Enid A. Haupt Garden, is designed to
accommodate visitors in wheelchairs and with strollers. All levels of the museum
are accessible by elevator.
