The Lincoln Memorial is an American
national monument constructed to honour the 16th President of the United
States, Abraham Lincoln. It is situated on the western end of the National Mall
in Washington, D.C., over from the Washington Monument. The builder was Henry
Bacon, the designer of the primary statue – Abraham Lincoln, 1920 – was Daniel
Chester French; the Lincoln statue was designed by the Piccirilli Brothers and
the painter of the internal wall art was Jules Guerin. Devoted in 1922, it is
one of various ancient monuments constructed to honor an American president. It
has always been a important visitor appeal and since the 1930s has been a
remarkable center aimed on race relations.
The building is in the style of a Greek
Doric temple and consists of a large placed statue of Abraham Lincoln and
identities of two well-known presentations by Lincoln, The Gettysburg Deal with
and his Second Inaugural Address. The obituary has been the site of many famous
speeches, which includes Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream"
speech, presented on August 28, 1963, while in the rally at the end of the
March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
From 1959 to 2008, the Lincoln Memorial was
shown on the reverse of the United States one cent coin, which carries
Lincoln's image bust on the front side. The sculpture of Lincoln can be seen in
the monument. This was completed to mark the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's
birth. The memorial also seems on the back of the U.S. five dollar bill, the
front side of which bears Lincoln's image.
